Our Motor Vehicle, Bike & Cycle Mechanics provision gives students of all ages the opportunity to explore the automotive and mechanical world in a practical, supportive workshop environment — and to discover that they have a genuine talent for it.
From cars and light vehicles to motorcycles and bicycles, we cover the full spectrum of mechanical study. Whether a student is completely new to the subject or has always had a passion for engines and machines, our courses provide the knowledge, skills, and confidence to take the next step — whether that’s an apprenticeship, further training, or a first job in the industry.
We offer both Pre-16 and Post-16 pathways, meaning students can start their mechanical journey early and continue to build on it as they grow.
What’s Covered
Motor Vehicle Mechanics Students are introduced to the fundamentals of how cars and light vehicles work. This covers vehicle systems including the engine, electrical systems, brakes, suspension, transmission, and exhaust. Students learn safe workshop practices, how to use tools and diagnostic equipment correctly, and how to carry out basic maintenance and inspection tasks. An understanding of health and safety in the automotive environment is embedded throughout.

- Engine operation and basic maintenance
- Vehicle electrical and battery systems
- Tyres, brakes, and suspension basics
- Health, safety, and PPE in the workshop
- Customer interaction and service documentation

Bike Mechanics (Motorcycles) For students interested in two-wheeled vehicles, our motorcycle mechanics element introduces the mechanics of bikes, scooters, and mopeds. Students learn how these vehicles differ from cars, exploring their engines, drivetrains, braking systems, and controls. It’s a fascinating and specialist area of the industry with strong employment demand.

- Chain, belt, and shaft drive systems
- Braking systems and safety features
- Basic servicing tasks and pre-ride checks
- Pathway to motorcycle technician apprenticeships
Cycle Mechanics Cycling is booming in the UK from everyday commuters to professional sport cyclists and skilled cycle mechanics are in growing demand. Our cycle mechanics element gives students a thorough grounding in how bicycles work and how to service, repair, and maintain them to a professional standard.
Key topics include:
- Bicycle anatomy and component identification
- Gear systems: derailleurs, cables, and indexing
- Braking systems: rim brakes and disc brakes
- Wheel building, truing, and tyre fitting
- Basic frame inspection and assessment
- Tools, workshop setup, and safe working practices
- Career pathways in cycling: bike shops, cycle hire, and sports support
Qualifications Available
Pre-16:
- ABC Level 1 Award in Automotive Studies (Ofqual: 601/7542/4)
- Level 2 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies — Light Vehicle (Ofqual: 600/2966/3)
Post-16:
- Level 2 Certificate in Motor Vehicle Studies and Light Vehicle
- Progression units covering motorcycle and cycle mechanics
- CSCS Card preparation (for those progressing into automotive support roles)
