Getting Ready for the Real World

Nobody is born knowing how to manage money, cook a meal, navigate public transport, or deal with a difficult situation at work. These are skills that need to be learned and for many young people, the opportunity to learn them simply hasn’t come along yet.

At Elevate Training, our Life Skills course fills that gap. It’s a practical, down-to-earth course that gives students the real-world knowledge and confidence to manage everyday life independently. Whether a young person is preparing to leave school, move toward greater independence, or simply needs help building the foundations of a stable and fulfilling adult life, this course meets them where they are and takes them forward.

We teach Life Skills with honesty, humour, and genuine care — because the young people we work with deserve a course that respects their intelligence and takes their futures seriously.

What’s Covered

Managing Money & Budgeting Understanding money is one of the most important skills a young person can develop. Students learn how to budget for everyday expenses, understand wages and taxes, manage a bank account, avoid debt, and make informed financial decisions.

Topics include:

  • Reading a payslip and understanding deductions
  • Creating and managing a personal budget
  • Understanding bills, rent, and household costs
  • Introduction to savings and banking
  • Avoiding scams and financial exploitation

Cooking & Nutrition Students learn how to feed themselves properly. This covers basic cooking skills, meal planning, understanding nutritional balance, reading food labels, and shopping on a budget. Simple, achievable, and genuinely useful.

Travel & Transport Getting from A to B independently is something many of our students have never been given the chance to learn. Students explore how to use public transport confidently planning routes, buying tickets, understanding timetables as well as basic road safety and travel awareness.

Home Management From basic cleaning and laundry to understanding household appliances and simple DIY, students learn the practical skills that keep a home safe, clean, and functioning a crucial foundation for independent living.

Communication & Relationships Life requires us to communicate and negotiate in all sorts of situations. Students develop the skills to communicate assertively and respectfully in personal relationships, in the workplace, and when dealing with services, authorities, and institutions.

Understanding Rights & Responsibilities Students explore their rights as citizens including tenancy rights, employment rights, consumer rights, and how to access support services when things go wrong. Knowing your rights is empowering, and this module helps students feel informed and prepared.

Health & Accessing Support Students learn about registering with a GP, accessing NHS services, understanding prescriptions and appointments, and knowing where to turn for support with physical health, mental health, or personal crises.

Employment Readiness Writing a CV, preparing for an interview, understanding a contract these practical steps toward employment are covered clearly and confidently, giving students the tools they need to take that first step into the working world.
